Shirley Hurley

Shirley M. Hurley, 83, went to be with her Savior on Monday, December 31, 2012 in Newton, Ks.

Shirley was born May 16, 1929, in Dodge City at home, to Carter E. and Ada (McCammon) Calder. She married Lucius M. “Mike” Hurley on March 23, 1947. A graduate of Dodge City High School and Wilcoxen Beauty School, she owned and operated Shirley’s Beauty Salon in Newton for 40 years, and retired in 1990. Shirley belonged to the American Legion and VFW auxiliaries, and was a 50-year member of Eastern Star and Beauceant. With her husband she was active in the Harvey County Shrine and Midian Pipes and Drums in Wichita. A longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Newton, Shirley enjoyed knitting, crocheting and needlework, and taught many others the same. She was a kind and compassionate listener who will be remembered for her humor and affection.

Shirley is survived by her children, Tom Hurley and his wife, Anna, of Westminster, Colo.; Bob Hurley and his wife, Barb, of Wichita; Cheryl Hurley of Wichita; and Kim Benson of Admire, Kan.; grandchildren, Christiane Doom and Lauren Hurley of Wichita, Ronda Keveles of Lawton, Okla., Randy Derstein of Evans, Colo., and Gannon and Dakota Benson of Admire; nine great-grandchildren; eight great-great children and a sister, Marjorie Brock of Grand Junction, Colo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, and siblings Jerry Calder and Gayl Mino.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.

Services are Saturday (Jan. 5, 2013) at 2:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in Newton with the Rev. Doug Tofteland presiding.

Memorials may be given to First United Methodist Church, contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114.
