Mrs. Olivia Melissa (Vargas) Smith was born April 19, 1966 in Newton, Kansas. She graduated from Newton High School in 1984.
Melissa worked at the Old Mill and Main Street Company in Newton, as well as Dillard’s and McLean Magnet School in Wichita.
She married Robert W. Smith on October 15, 1992 in Wichita. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.
On May 13, 2015, the Lord called her home to rest after a long battle with multiple illnesses. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Melissa is preceded in death by her father, Bill L. Vargas.
She is survived by her mother, Olivia A. (Mosqueda) Goodall; step-father Johnnie Goodall; husband Robert W. Smith; son Tyler W. Smith; granddaughter Jordyn Stahl; brother Bill Vargas and Misty Drinnen; sister Mary Vargas-Barthell and husband Joe; brother Dominic Goodall. Along with nieces and nephews Devyn, Angel, Tova Vargas, Isaiah Thaw, Essence, Aniayah, Rashad Dickinson, Gaby, Claudia, Anthony Goodall; sister-in-laws Sherry Salisbury and husband Mark, Angie Hays and husband Dan; brother-in-laws Ronnie Smith, Roger Smith and wife Nicole; and a host of great nieces, nephews, family and friends. As well as her in-laws, Joe and Carol Luna of Anthony, Ks.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be said at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday (May 19, 2015) followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 A.M., at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Newton. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Newton.
Friends may call at the funeral home Monday 1pm til 8pm, where the family will receive friends between 6 and 7 that evening.
A memorial has been established with the Newton Relay for Life, of which Melissa had been active with. Contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114.
