Marjorie Guthrie

Marjorie Ella Guthrie, 98, of Newton, died Friday (Feb. 1, 2013) at the Presbyterian Manor in Newton.

She was born December 16, 1914 in Hesston, Kansas, the daughter of Charles P. and Nellie Hawkey Sauerwein. She attended schools in Newton, graduating in Newton High School in 1932.

Marjorie married George Wayne Guthrie on March 31, 1936 in Norwich, Kansas. They then moved to the Peabody area where Wayne and Marjorie drove a school bus for Peabody schools for many years. They later moved to Newton. He died on November 20, 1989.

She had been an office manager at E & H Foam and Farm Bureau for several years. Marjorie was a longtime member of the Salem United Methodist Church, the Double Duty Sunday School Class, Order of Eastern Star, Chapter #5, B.P. W., and the former Axtell Christian Hospital Auxillary.

Survivors include son James W. Guthrie of Silver Springs, MD., Kenneth R. Guthrie of Murphy, NC, Gene R. Guthrie of Conroe, TX., and Keith E. Guthrie of Inman, KS.; brothers Wilbur Sauerwein of Newton, Ardith Sauerwein of Peabody; sister Virginia Bullard of Newton; eight grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and many great grandchildren and several great great grandchildren.

Marjorie is preceded in death by her daughter Mary Lou McDilda; one grandchild; her parents; husband; brother Bob Sauerwein; sisters Gladys Miller, Wilda Yarnell, Ruth Guthrie and Charlene Hamm, Marian Winsor, Lucille Day Putnam and Elaine Stehman.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday (Feb. 5, 2013) at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Walton Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 1:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. with the family greeting from 7:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M.

Memorials may be made to the Peabody Community Foundation, in care of the funeral home.
