Lois Marlene Porter

April 19, 1932 — August 3, 2023

LOIS M. PORTER, 91, passed away on Thursday, August 3, 2023) at Paramount Community Living in Newton.

She was born on April 19, 1932, in Argyle, Iowa to Loyd and Ida (Kendall) Newberry.  On October 18, 1953, Lois married Melvin A. Porter in Newton.  He preceded her in death on July 13, 2018.

In her early working career, she was a medical assistant to doctors at the Axtell Clinic and Hospital and later many people will remember Lois working at the JC Penney annex store in downtown Newton.

Lois loved reading, crosswords and was always ready for an afternoon at the casino in Mulvane.  She loved baseball.  When her sons played high school ball, she and Melvin traveled to every game.  Lois became a second “baseball mom” to many of the players.  Her children and grandchildren remember Lois’ love for candy making and the HUGE bags of homemade chocolate candies and peanut brittle they would receive at Christmas.  Being a diabetic she couldn’t eat much of her candy creations, but she was great at making it and gifting it to friends and family.

Her real love in life was her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.  Her shelves were lined with pictures of her family.

Lois will be missed by her five children, Marla (Morgan) Sharp, Newton, Valeria (Rodney) Skitt, Longmont, CO, Shelley Baker, Centennial, CO, Douglas (Kim) Porter, S. Hutchinson, and Timothy (Heidi) Porter, Newton, 14 grandchildren and their spouses and fiancées, 12 great-grandchildren and many dearly loved nieces and nephews and their extended families.

Besides her husband and parents, Lois was also preceded in death by her sister, Florence Blankenship, and brothers Loren Newberry and Alan Newberry.

A memorial has been established with Paramount Community Living & Rehab, Newton.  Memorial contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS  67114.

Cremation has taken place.  There will be no memorial services.  Lois was recently celebrated by her family and friends at a 91st birthday party in April.  Her remains will be interred, at a later date, alongside her husband, Melvin, at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery, Winfield.
