Lena Grant

 Lena Allene Grant, 81, died Friday (July 12, 2019) at the Kansas Christian Home in Newton.

She was born on January 14, 1938 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, the daughter of William and Harmiena Nuyen VanHaaften. She attended schools in Battle Creek, Michigan. Lena married Bobby Dee Grant on June 29, 1958 in El Dorado, Kansas, they had recently celebrating 61 years of marriage.

Shortly after being married they moved to Newton. Lena worked at Moore’s IGA Store for several years. Until she retired, she worked at the Prime Time Convenience Store. She was an avid bingo player, she enjoyed going to the 101 in Wichita and both the American Legion and V.F.W. in Newton.

Lena was a member of the First Baptist Church in Newton and the Newton Eagles Lodge #2516 for nearly 40 years.

Survivors include her husband Bobby of the home; daughter Karen Rothe and husband Clay of Hutchinson, Ks.; grandchildren Trenton Jacobs and wife Amy of Kansas City, Ks. and Rachael Allmon and husband Drew of College Station, Tx.,; two great granddaughters Sawyer and Elliott Jacobs; two sisters Anna Armstrong and Judy Reed both of Battle Creek, Michigan; and son-in-law Michael Jacobs.

Lena is preceded in death by her parent and brother Charles VanHaaften.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday (July 19, 2019) at the Broadway Colonial Funeral Home. Private family inurnment will take place at the Greenwood Cemetery in Newton.

A memorial has been established with the Newton Meals on Wheels and the American Red Cross. Contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114.

Arrangements are by Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, Newton.
