JoEllen Koerner

JoEllen Koerner, 75, died on December 29th, 2013 at her home in rural Newton, Kansas. She was born on August 3, 1937 to Helen Adamson and Don Joe McGinn at the Axtell Hospital in Newton, Kansas.
On June 9, 1956 she married Charles A. Koerner at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Halstead, Kansas. He preceded her in death on September 28, 2003.
She was a farm wife for many years, raising her family. JoEllen did work outside of the home at Boeing for several years, and retired in 2009 from USD # 373 as a bus driver.
JoEllen was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Newton, Kansas and had served on the altar society in years past. She was a member of the the Circle 8 Square Dance club, the Round Robin EHU, Friendship Club and the Lucky 13 4-H club. Her involvement with the general election and the voting process went back many years, and was even held at her homestead until 2011.. JoEllen was also involved in the Sedgwick Girls and the Party Girls clubs. She enjoyed traveling to Colorado with her friends, seeing the mountains, hiking with family and friends, but most of all enjoyed time spend with her family
Preceding her in death were her parents and her spouse, Charles, an infant brother, LeRoy, sister-in-law, Alice Baumgartner.
Survivors include two sons, Stephen Koerner and Joel (Debbie) Koerner; two daughters, Charlene (Dan) Vierthaler and Marie (Shawn) Ashcraft, all of Newton; 8 grandchildren, Stacie and Kristen Vierthaler, Alex, Ben and Cole Koerner, Cassidy, Jerrod and Brett Ashcraft; sister, Nancy (Bill) Rice, Sedgwick; 2 brothers, C.G (Deb) McGinn, Sedgwick and Earl (Sue) McGinn, Garden City; 3 sister-in-laws, Kay Perkins, Newton, Sandra (Ben) Stahly, Topeka, Joan Tice (Wichita) and many nieces, nephews, close friends and wonderful neighbors.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 3, from 1:00 to 8:00 P.M. with the family greeting from 6-8 P.M. at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be Friday, January 4th at St. Mary’s Catholic Church at 6:30 P.M. Immediately following the Rosary, the family will greet friends in the school cafeteria.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Father James Mainzer will be the celebrant.
Burial will take place in the Greenwood Cemetery in Newton, Kansas.
Memorial Contributions may be made to the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Walton Rural Life Charter Foundation or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society in care of Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E . Broadway, Newton, Kansas, 67114.
