Jay Dee Cook

Jay Dee Cook was born in Rosston, Oklahoma, on October 24, 1944 to Walter R. and Ruth N. (Sundgren) Cook. Jay passed away on January 15, 2024 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.

Jay graduated from Newton High School in 1962. He married Vickie Lynn Davis on July 14, 1963. Jay and Vickie were blessed with two children; Deeana Lynn (Wingert) and Kelly Jay Cook, two grandchildren: Brian Gene Wingert and Jason Dene Wingert, and one great-grand-daughter: Aspen Marie Wingert.

Jay worked as a letter carrier in the cities of Peabody, Wichita, and the Newton Post Offices. After 34 years he retired from the Newton Post Office on 2001. After retirement, he worked in the maintenance department at the Peabody High School for ten years before again retiring in 2011.

Jay was a member (retired) of the Peabody Fire Department for 29 years. Also serving as a member and former President of the Fourth Fire District, for 17 years He was a member of the Peabody City Council, and the Peabody Zoning and Planning Board for several years. He was elected mayor of the City of Peabody during the 1980’s.

Jay enjoyed golfing and bowling He bowled in a senior league in Newton for several years. He also enjoyed spending time with Vickie at the casinos. Jay also enjoyed working with his hands doing home renovations.

He is survived by his wife Vickie of Peabody, KS; daughter Deeana of Wichita, KS; son Kelly of Peabody, KS; grandsons Brian of Derby, KS; and Jason of Newton, KS; and great grand-daughter Aspen of Newton, KS. And two of his brothers William (Dub) Cook of Newton, KS; and Casey Cook of Moore, OK.

He was preceded in death by his parents Walter R. and Ruth N. (Sundgren) Cook, two brothers; Donald Cook, and Kenneth Cook, and two sisters; Lethia Slack and Betty Sheffler.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, January 17, 2024 from 5-9 pm with family present from 5-6:30 pm at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton, KS. Funeral Services will be held Thursday, January 18, 2024, 2:00 pm at Peabody United Methodist Church with Pastor Nate Gift officiating. Burial will be at Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Peabody, KS.

Memorials are suggested to Peabody United Methodist Church and may be sent to or left with the funeral home.
