Hilda L. Higgins, 93, of Walton, died Friday (August 11, 2017) at the Newton Presbyterian Manor.

She was born on May 28, 1924 on the family farm near Walton, Kansas, the daughter of David Schmidt and Anna J. Goossen Lehrman. The family moved to Newton when she was six years old where she attended schools.

Hilda married Howard Eugene Higgins, Sr. on August 18, 1940 in Caney, Ks. They lived in California for a short time period while he was in the military. After being discharged from the service they returned to Newton where they lived until moving to Walton in 1970.

She was a longtime member of the Walton United Methodist Church and had enjoyed singing in the choir at the Newton Senior Center.

Survivors include two sons Kerry Higgins and wife Sherry of Hillsboro, Ks. and Gene Higgins, Jr. and wife Mary of Walton; two daughters Dani Porter of Newton and Fran Tompkins and husband Bob of Murfreesboro, Tn.; brother Bill Lehrman of Newton; 12 grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.

Hilda is preceded in death by her parents; husband on March 8, 2001; brother Melvin Lehrman; sisters Pauline Fox and Dorothy Sutter; and son-in-law Harold Porter.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Wednesday (August 16, 2017) at the Walton United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Walton Cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home Tuesday 1:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M., where the family will receive friends between 7and 8pm.

A memorial has been established with the Walton Fire Dept., contributions may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, Ks. 67114.
