"Gabby" Corona

Gavino “Gabby” Corona, 89, of Newton, died Thursday (June 13, 2013) at the Newton Medical Center.

He was born on January 13, 1924 in Waukegan, Illinois, the son of Gertrudes and Casimira Gutierrez Corona. The family moved to Newton when Gabby was a teenager. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Gavino married Margaret Estrada on October 12, 1946 in Newton. He had worked for the Santa Fe Railroad for many years, retiring in 1984.

Survivors include his wife Margaret of the home in Newton; son Joe Corona and his wife Penny Ross-Corona of St. Louis, Mo.; son-in-law John Burns of Newton; brothers Lupe and Joe both of Newton, and Frank of Phoenix, Az.; seven grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren.

Gavino is preceded in death by his parents; an infant son Antonio; daughter Bentura “Penny” Burns; an infant brother Jose; sisters Romona Corona, Georgia Arrellano Porras and Esther Davilla; and great grandson Ian Christopher Burns.

Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at 7:00 P.M., Monday (June 17, 2013).

The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday (June 18, 2013) both at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Newton.

Friends may call at the funeral home Monday 9am til 5pm.
