Estela Chavez

Estela Rosario Chavez, 93, died Wednesday (December 2, 2015) at the Via Christi Regional Medical Center-St. Joseph Campus.

She was born on July 1, 1922 in Chihuahua, Mexico, the second oldest child of Sebero and Teresa Grajeda Rodriguez. The family moved to Newton when Estela was an infant. She was raised and attended school in Newton.

Estela married Juan Chavez, in Newton on February 23, 1946. He died on April 20, 2009.
Shortly after his death, Estela moved to Derby to live with her granddaughter, Regina.

Estela enjoyed spending time at the Senior Center in Derby.

Survivors include her children, Linda McDonald of Newton, Ida Ann Solis Hernandez of Wichita, Hector Chavez of Newton, Delores Chavez of Newton, and Doris Mitchell of Newton;
grandchildren, Troy Solis, Regina Solis-Willhight, Robert Mitchell, Jerrod Mitchell, and
Andrea Chavez; great grandchildren, Justin Solis, Cassandra Solis, Jackson Solis, Dustin Miller,
Mia Miller, and Aliana Segura. She is also survived by her siblings, Martha Gomez of Newton, Ofelia Garcia of Hutchinson, Enriquita Calvillo of Hutchinson, Felipa Rodriguez of Hutchinson, Rueben Rodriguez of Newton, and Gloria Caudillo of Hutchinson.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother Bonefacio Rodriguez; and sisters Vera Martinez and Elvera Martinez.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday (December 7, 2015) at the Broadway Colonial Funeral Home. Interment will be in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

The casket will be open for viewing at the funeral home Sunday between 1pm and 5pm.
