Eleanor Gooden

Eleanor Ruth Gooden died December 17, 2021 in her home, Newton, KS. She was born January 2, 1927 at home in Wright Kansas, the third daughter of Leslie R. and Elizabeth F. Howard Doonan. Her parents moved from Wright to Dodge City in 1928 where she attended school.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed her family and service to others and as “Gene’s partner in business.”

She belonged to Keen Klippers 4H of Dodge City, served as a leader in Girl Scouts in Scott City & Dodge City, helped with Boy Scouts in Greensburg, served terms as President of J. B. Club and Joy Makers in Greensburg and the Kansas State Button Society. She joined the National Button Society in 1980, enjoyed monthly meetings and NBS Conventions held in different states each year. She thoroughly enjoyed her button collection and showing them to others.

On June 10, 1944, she married William E.“Gene”Gooden in Chicopee Falls, Massachussetts where he was stationed before going overseas to serve as a tail gunner on a B-24 in Italy. They lived in Meade, Dighton, Scott City, and Dodge City between Nov. 1945 and Feb. 1962 when they moved to Greensburg. There they owned and operated the Dairy Delite until December 1976 moving from there to Newton, Kansas in October 1997.

She was preceded in death by Gene on December 18, 2007, her parents Leslie and Elizabeth (Howard) Doonan, baby brother Leon, two sisters Elfrieda Hyatt Ogden and Eldoris Neely, and great grandson Lionel ‘Leo’ Gutierrez, one nephew Gary Lee Hyatt, nieces Janet Neely Ruder and Joan Neely McPherson, and great nephews Terry and Larry Eccelston.

She is survived by Ruth Ann (Bob) Wedel, Greensburg; Bill (Nancy) Gooden, Choctaw, OK; Melinda (Darence) Munsell, Newton; Tina (Jay) White, Oxford; nephews Glenn Hyatt, CA and Gary Ogden, WA; 10 grandchildren, Dallas (Mandy) Wedel, Lori (Jeremey) Zehr, Toni (Rene) Cornejo, Alicia (Mike) McKee, Whitney (Jose) Gutierrez, Amy (John) Roberts, Sarah White, Amber (Robert) Barber, Joshua Munsell, Zachary Munsell; 2 step-grandchildren- Cyndi (Mark) Winter, Tiffany (Blake) McCrabb; 13 great-grandchildren- Isabella Buonaugurio, Jonah Buonaugurio, Kendal Wedel, Daisy Cornejo, Krystel Cornejo, Dominic Cornejo, Karlos Cornejo, Jaden McKee, Peyton McKee, Katelynn McKee, Jovannie Gutierrez , Emelio Gutierrez, Clara Roberts, step great grand children- Gage Winter (Veronica), Maci Winter, Avery Winter, Molly McCrabb, and Maggie McCrabb.

Funeral services and celebration of Eleanor's life will be held at 10:00A.M., Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at the Eastside Methodist Church, Newton with Pastor Steve Hysom presiding. Burial will follow at 2:00 P.M.in the Fairview Cemetery, Greensburg.

Visitation with the family will be held on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 from 6:00-8:00 at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, Newton.

Memorials are suggested to Eastside Methodist Church or Kansas State Button Society in care of Broadway Colonial Funeral Home 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS 67114-2222.
