Eldon Edward Garnett

July 27, 1959 — June 24, 2023

With great sadness we share the passing of Eldon Garnett on Saturday, (June 24, 2023) in Wichita, KS,  

He was born on July 27, 1959, in Newton, the first son of Floyd (Skippy) and Winnifred Garnett,  Eldon graduated from Newton High School, where he excelled in math and electronics.  Immediately after graduation, Eldon joined the US Navy.  He was excited for the opportunity to serve his country.  Eldon served on many ships, but his favorite was the USS New Jersey.  He received many commendations, including Navy Expeditionary Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Coast Guard Unit Commendation and National Defense Service Medal.  He also traveled to many countries and ports, but served most his time in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. 

Eldon served 30 years in the Navy and upon retirement returned home to help take care of his grandparents.  Eldon also LOVED trains and after retirement achieved one of his lifelong dreams of working for the Railroad.

Mr. Garnett is preceded in death by his father, Floyd; brother Kevin Garnett; Grandparents, Harry and Edna Garnett and Edward and Mary Rawlins. Survivors include his mother, Winnifred; brother, Steven and wife Deana of Salina; sister, Dee, of Kansas City; nephews, Jeffrey, KJ and Jayden, and many family members and friends who loved and adored him.

Public viewing will be held at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home beginning Monday, July 3, 2023, from 8:00AM– 5:00 PM, and visitation with the family will be from 3:00 - 5:00 PM.

The Celebration of Life Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 5, 2023, at Halls Chapel AME Church in Newton, Pastor Michelle Cole Rucker, officiating. Immediately following the service, Eldon will be laid to rest with Military Honors at Greenwood Cemetery.

Family suggests memorial to Halls Chapel AME Church and may be sent to Broadway Colonial Funeral Home, 120 E. Broadway, Newton, KS  67114.
