Charles Warren (Chuck) Engel was born August 26, 1946 in Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Ks. to Charles A. and Wilma (Jaillite) Engel. He passed away Wednesday, October 25, 2023 in Newton, Ks.
Chuck grew up in Abilene, Kansas where he attended school and graduated from Abilene High School in 1964. Chuck continued his education at Kansas State University, where he not only received his BS in secondary education in Chemistry & Physics; he also met his future wife, Sue, on a blind date. Chuck and Sue Hinkle were married in 1968.
Five months after their marriage, Chuck left for Ft. Ord, California to receive basic training in the Army Reserves. Chuck would spend nearly 27 years in service, retiring as a Command Sergeant Major. He was very proud to have served his country.
In 1969, he began his teaching career in Newton, Kansas. He remained in Newton with USD 373 until his retirement in 2000. During that time, he received his Master's Degree from Emporia State University.
Probably the most significant dates in his life were April 6, 1972 when his son, Tye was born. And then November 10, 1974 when his second son Toby, was born. Chuck loved his sons beyond measure!
And then grandchildren - WOW - he was smitten all over again!
Possibly the most tragic time in his life was the death of Toby. The trauma caused the Parkinson's Disease Chuck suffered from to spiral downward.
Chuck loved and cared for his family. He loved teaching. He coached and officiated football, which he enjoyed immensely.
Chuck is preceded in death by his parents, two stepmothers, a stepbrother, and son, Toby. He is survived by his wife, Sue, of the home. His son Tye & Holly Engel of Halstead. Grandchildren; Josie & Katharine Engel. Delaney & Brogan Engel. And our "pretend" grandkids Lane & Logan Budde and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Chuck will be remembered as a smart, quiet, caring man who was loved and will be missed by many.
