Annie Martinez

December 29, 1943 — August 28, 2022

Annie Loyola Martinez, 78, died Sunday (August 28, 2022) at her home in Newton.

She was born Dec. 29, 1943, in Emporia, Ks.  The daughter and second child of John and Ida Solis.  Her family moved to Newton and her education began at Washington Grade School and completed when she graduated from Newton High in 1961.

She married her spouse Alberto Martinez in November of the same year and their marriage of almost 60 years was blessed by God with four children, eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Annie loved life and treasured the friendships she accumulated through her work which began in the Food Service department of Santa Fe Middle School where her youngest son John was enrolled and later transferring to the same department at Newton High.  She continued there until after his graduation.

A few years later she began her employment at what is known now as the Newton Health Center.  Working in the Environmental Services department for thirty plus years before retiring.

She often reminisced about her coworkers, the many nurses, and physicians she befriended and felt blessed to know during her time there.

Besides loving the very special times she spent with her family, Annie loved listening and dancing to the “Oldies”.  A pleasure which occurred more often during the early years of their marriage, enjoyable occasions that slowly subsided with the passage of time but will forever be embedded in the memories of two hearts that became one.

Annie was preceded in death by her parents, older brother Johnny, younger brother Victor, first born daughter Angelina Ann and grandson Nathan Alberto Martinez.

She is survived by her husband Alberto; younger brother Robert Solis; sons Vincent Martinez, John (Jennifer)Martinez; daughter Rebecca (Kevin) Lambert; grandchildren Mathew (Sarah)DelVecchio, Abigail (John)Pinkerton, Isaiah Romero, Cruz Romero, Adam Lambert, Joshua Lambert, Joseph (Jennifer)Lambert, Olivia Martinez, Emma Martinez, Jacob Martinez; five great grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday (Sept. 2nd) at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Newton. Interment will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery.
